Lane/Shoulder Drop-Off

Lane/shoulder drop-off is the difference between the settlement or erosion of the shoulder and the pavement travel-lane edge. The elevation difference can be a safety hazard, and it also can cause increased water infiltration.

Severity Description
Low The difference between the pavement edge and shoulder is between 1 and 2 in (25 and 50 mm).
Medium The difference in elevation is between 2 and 4 in (50 and 100 mm).
High The difference in elevation is greater than 4 in (100 mm).
